List of HTML editors[edit]

This page has a nomenclature problem. A WYSIWYG page layout or site design program is not, technically, an 'HTML editor' since that class of software is generally incapable of actually editing existing HTML code (it can generate HTML by exporting a proprietary format to HTML format, but generally can't open and edit an existing document). While HTML can be edited with any plain text editor, text editors are not really HTML editors since they lack tools specifically geared toward the handling of code (although there are notable exceptions). Word processors are also not HTML editors, often having more in common with WYSIWYG products. So...either this list should be pared down extensively, or we need to question its purpose and value. Combined: all the Composer derivitives in 1 or 2 lines. I understand that the full-time developer for NVU has changed jobs, that the code has been released to an active open source community, but that it's now required to have another name again which is Kompozer. I'm no exepert but it looks like Seamonkey Composer is still going.

The point of the list, I believe, is to list the articles about relevant software that exist within Wikipedia. The comparison you are asking for would be a 'Comparison' article such as has already been proposed within the HTML editors article. It would not be this article, which serves a different purpose. I guess is that the typical reader has something to write or edit a web page about; that's their interest. They might need warning about the editors that write bad code or make it hard to continue the learning curve, just as they might be interested in ones that have good templates or good instructions. Categorization[edit]

Can someone explain the difference between 'basic' and 'source code' text editors? How does it come that Emacs is categorized as a basic text editor while Eclipse (and even Notepad++) is categorized as 'source code' editors? --Nopedia (talk) 09:47, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

The para at the top of the list says this is a list of editors 'with articles', yet about half of the entries are redlined. Should the redline entries be removed, or should the para be rewritten? [EDIT] I'm just going to remove them, and if that's a bad thing, we can revert the change. [EDIT] I've also removed the section, 'Web-based editors', because all of the links therein were redlined. These changes are very drastic and I don't like them myself. The page should really be a full list of HTML editors and quite a few have been added in recent weeks. A red-lined link should prompt somebody to write an article about it, it should not be deleted just because of that. As it happens the HTML editors page is so limited in its scope and biased towards just a few editors (all WYSIWYG) so is not a replacement. Such a change should certainly have been done through the normal Wikipedia discussion process, not just foisted on us like this. You are completely missing my point. The opening paragraph states that this is a list of editors with articles in Wikipedia; if there is an editor in the list that is a redlink, then it doesn't have an article in Wikipedia. Therefore, it should be removed. I didn't create the list. If it's the consensus that this should be a list of all editors that exist or have ever existed, then why does the opening paragraph state that this is a list of editors with articles in Wikipedia? I note that someone (probably you) has gone in and replaced several of the redlinked editors. As for 'foisting' anything on you, I was making a bold change as invited by the Wikipedia user guidelines in accordance with making the list fall into what appeared to be its stated purpose. If you disagree, then revert the edits. I did offer the idea openly as you can plainly see above. I didn't 'foist' anything on anyone. And the HTML Editors article isn't meant to be a replacement for this. This list is meant to augment that article, and its content was broken off from it to shorten the original article's length. No I had not misunderstood your point. But I would suggest that instead of removing all the redlinked articles you changed the opening paragraph to remove 'with articles in Wikipedia'. It SHOULD be a fairly comprehensive list of HTML editors and those without current WP articles should have them added later, just like everything else on WK works. No it wasn't me who added those extra ones, the ones I added recently already had articles or I wrote them myself so they were already blue links. So do I. The problem isn't the red links; the problem is the premise. Why should HTML editors that do not (yet) have an own article be excluded?? Whom should help that?? It is regrettable that these articles are not (yet) available; but it is a bit of useful information just to know the names: because then you can use a search machine for the names instead of working through tons of useless links you get by searching for 'html editor'. - Or is it meant for the 'reputation' of the WP? That there must not be any hint in this side that the WP is not complete? The WP IS NOT complete (it will NEVER be complete, and any clearminded human being is aware of it; just fools rant about it) - so why pretend?? FLwriter[edit]

What about FLwriter? It is a REAL compact basic Linux word processor based on HTML files. AFAIK its file is less than 700 kB size; so it is essential for small distris (Abiword is several times its size) In fact, Damn Small Linux had it on version 2.0 or 2.1. Quanta Plus, originally called Quanta, is a webIntegrated development environment (IDE) for HTML, XHTML, CSS, XML, PHP and any other XML-based languages or scripting languages. Quanta was licensed under GPL before the release of version 2.0 final.

Quanta is capable of both WYSIWYG design and handcoding. It features tag completion on the fly, tag editing through a dialog interface, script language variable auto-completion, project management, live preview, PHP debugger, CVS support, Subversion support (through external plugin).

Quanta is no longer being developed, but some of its features have been merged to its sister project KDevelop.^[1]

• Project management, including support for local and remote (through the network) projects. Project files can be uploaded to many servers using various protocols. CVS support is integrated, Subversion support is possible through external plugins. Advanced project features, like actions assigned to various project events and assigning roles in a team are also available.
• Uses KDE KIO slaves for FTP, SSH (through FISH) and other protocol support.
• HTML and XML support: by default support for various (X)HTML versions and some XML based languages are available. This support can be extended either by the user (by importing an XML DTD) or via the 'hotstuff' interface, by downloading XML support packages. XML support means autocompletion of tags and attributes, visual editing of tags, document structure viewing, validation/problem reporting, context help.
• script language support: by default PHP support is included, other languages can be supported by creating a language description package. PHP debugger interface is included for the Gubed and XDebug debuggers. Autocompletion for built in and user functions/variables is possible.
• CSS support: visual CSS editor, autocompletion for CSS.
• templates: full site, one document or snippet templates are possible. Templates can be shared via hotstuff.
• user toolbars and actions: toolbars can be freely created with stock or actions created by the user on it. The toolbars can be assigned to a language or to a project. The toolbars are also shareable via hotstuff.
• extensibility: any type of scripts/executables can be assigned to actions or project events. Users can exchange toolbars through the hotstuff system.
• plugins: general KParts plugin support. Any KDE KParts component can be used inside Quanta, by default Konsole, KImageMapEditor, KLinkStatus, Cervisia (CVS) and KFileReplace are configured.
• integrated preview: documents can be previewed inside the application using the KHTML engine. Preprocessing the documents through a web server before previewing is possible.
• context help: context help for many languages can be downloaded via hotstuff. New help packages can be created by the user.
• variety of settings: the application is highly configurable, so everyone can adapt it to their needs.
• Built in rendering with KHTML.
• Display the source code, WYSIWYG Mode (called VPL (Visual Page Layout) in Quanta) or both.
